Well, it is time...we are moving on, to a new chronicle of our family's journeys. This blog has meant the world to us and I await the day when we can share this long wonderful journey with Nathaniel. It is now time to start a new and exciting journal of life with Nate. Our journey TO our adoption (hence the blog title) is complete and we have already begun the most profound and inspiring story to raise Nathaniel and to enjoy life together as a family. We hope you will join us.... at our new site... Life with Nathaniel, as we share stories and adventures from our family.

Happy as can be at the 4th of July festivities...

It seems like months ago....now that I have finally made the time to post 4th of July pics! Everything has been crazy and we are in full summer swing. I recently left my job....which was a big change but I accepted another position which I think will be best for our family.

In Nate news, he is my little love muffin. Lately it seems like all he wants to do is hug me really tight and say "mama-mama". It's so gratifying and makes me smile. He is so active and keeps us running constantly. He seems to like to 'drive' everything which I find pretty funny. I saw him driving his bouncy ball (moving it around like it was a ferarri or something with noise and all!). As for the 4th, he fell asleep @ 9:15 right before the fireworks but then he woke up right when they began going off. He loved them, as I suspected! He got really excited and started bouncing up and down when he saw the big ones. I am really excited for next year's when he can tell me what he likes about them!

We're headed on our first family camping trip next weekend- tent, sleeping bags, roasted marshmallows and all- nothing to really separate us from the country forest of rural PA!

It's time for an update!! Our days have been filled with all the typical summer activities- walks outside, picnics in the yard, swimming at the pool, eating watermelon late at night on the back deck, and lots of other fun. Nate seems to be in his glory during the warmer weather we've been having. He continues to thrive at school. He took his first few steps the other day and is bascially cruising all around the house now. He does have a little (did I say little?!) devil in which we have been seeing more and more. It is really so cute but you can certainly tell he is ALL boy. He loves to shake his head 'no' when I tell him yes! It's like clockwork everytime. He now thinks spitting is a daily pastime; he nearly laughs himself to death when he does it. Daddy and I are practicing our ignoring skills! He also thinks it's funny to throw his sippy cup on the floor (about 10-15 times per meal) . . . and when mom let's him know she doesn't approve- he laughs even harder! It's for all this and even more that I am constantly reminding myself how thankful I am for my little boy.

Lately we've really been noticing that he is comprehending a lot more. He really knows all his nicknames now and responds well. He knows a lot of words and how to say, "baba (bottle in our house) mama". I think one of the best parts of being a parent is watching your little one change right before your eyes. I have been noticing him growing and becoming a little boy much more now than I ever have. I know it's expected, and extremely exciting, but it reminds you of how important this time NOW really is.

We're headed to NH to Nanny's house for the 4th! So excited! We'll be basking in the warm sun and swimming in the lake. And Nathan will hopefully have his first campfire with the roasting of marshmallows and all. I am really looking forward to a getaway. It will be interesting to see how he reacts to the fireworks. I am guessing he will love them!

Ok, here are a few more pics. Yesterday, Rich took Nate to the grocery store with him and Nate came home with a balloon because he was very well behaved while Daddy shopped. He loves this balloon and had to take it on the walk, too.

To a thriving little boy who has forever changed our lives...

It really is true when they say parenthood fundamentally changes us forever. Whenever I take time to reflect on the past year's journey-- I find myself still filled with the exhiliration and excitement to bring our son home. I find myself still smiling about our entire experience. If I knew then what I knew now, I certainly would have worried less and enjoyed more (isn't that the title of a book?!).

Family Day- Father's Day

The best part about special days like Father's Day is that we get to spend more time together as a family. When we got up this morning, Nate had a special present for his Dad- a card and a laminated poem with his footprints that he made at school.

The poem read:

Our weekend with Nanny and Auntie MoMo

It was definitely an all girls weekend! Last weekend Nanny and Auntie Mo Mo made the long drive to PA from NH- they visited for 3 days. We had such a fun time- we laughed so hard I think Nate was probably wondering what was wrong with us!

Nate LOVES to go out to eat and really do anything where he can see new things. We went to dinner, had a BBQ one day, and went shopping one afternoon!

Nathan is doing wonderful. He is almost on milk only. He's just doing one formula bottle before bed- which I plan to stop next week. He is not eating anymore baby food! He loves chicken, veggie burgers, and fish. He drinks perfectly from a sippy cup. He also has a particular liking for shredded cheese.

Today was SO incredibly hot we bought Nate a mini pool. I wish we had a real one in the yard...but this was definitely the next best thing. It's shaped like a frog with two big eyes and is just the right size. The water was freezing but he went in no problem and splashed and smiled. He is definitely a mommy's boy in that regard- we both love to swim! I am so excited that he will be starting swimming lessons soon.

I know, I have been so negligent in posting...we have been busy as usual. Actually, things have been so hectic- just balancing everyday life is keeping our schedules packed. Thankfully we've all been healthy. Last weekend Grampy, Juanita, Kate, and Great Nana came to visit. We had a great time! Nate had his first visit to Hershey park- and the verdict. . . he loved it! We went to the 3D show and on the famous chocolate ride...he was totally mesmerized. He loves to play with Kate and is almost walking. Did I say walking?! Wow...I can't believe my little boy is almost taking his first steps.

As you can see from the pics, the sun was out, and Nate's red hat was on all weekend. This weekend Nanny and Auntie Molly visited so I will have more pics to post soon. It was a beautiful weekend here.

Alphabets

Everywhere. I took this series of photos a few weeks ago when it was warm. Nathan really liked his alphabet's pasta. We've been slowly transitioning him more and more away from baby foods and into only whole foods. We are in the process of transitioning from formula to whole milk, since he just turned 12 months. His favorite food right now: cheerios and yogurt- he could live on the stuff!

We had such a great time! I think Nate was in awe of all of the excitement. He was mesmerized by the sounds and the lights and, at first, I think was a little taken aback. But, he quickly got in his 'play'mode. His favorite ride of the day was the little merry-go-round....we must have gone on at least 5 times! He held right onto the horse tightly and smiled the entire time. When Chuck E came over to sing Happy Birthday Nate just smiled and reached out to grab his nose. When Chuck E left, he kept looking for him wondering if he was coming back...it was so cute. The party was so much fun - what great memories we will have of his 1st birthday celebration. There were 4 other kiddos there so he had great company. When all was said and done, Mom was ready for a nap but Nathan had other plans...until he finally crashed late in the day. Birthday parties are so much fun but who knew they could be so exhausting?! :-)

And to top it all off that today is Mother's day, I couldn't feel happier. There was nothing special on the agenda today but spending time with my little guy means more than anything to me and that's what truly made today such a special day. In honor of Mother's day, we had a special gift basket delivered to Maria and her family...we want them to know we are thinking of them, too. The basket contained lots of goodies, a framed picture of Nathan, and a translated letter. I hope she knows we are thinking of them today.

The week in review

It's been a crazy, busy week! First, Nathan is doing wonderful. He continues to thrive at his daycare. He is super active there...on Friday, they were outside playing for most of the morning. He loves to chase around the other kids and stare at their toys, too. The teachers have theme weeks and last week it was animals. They had little chicks which hatched right in the classroom! Nathan loved the soft feel of their hair. All in all I am so pleased that his days at school are going well. He's just so adaptable.

Earlier this week the weather was beautiful, so we took the highchair out on the back deck and ate our dinner outside. Here are a few pics of the little guy as we were rolling out:

Summer is in the air!

We have been spending SO much more time outside lately now that the warmer weather has arrived. Nate absolutely loves it. I have been laying a blanket outside in the back yard and we bring different toys and snacks with us and play together in the warm sun. To me- this is paradise!

Nathan came home early again from school yesterday. His ear infection did not go away on the basic antibiotic. He needed something more powerful which we started him on yesterday. He had a really high fever but he seems to be doing better today. I am hoping he'll be 100% next week. Despite all of this though, he's still laughing and happy as can be (unless it's bedtime and he wants mommy or daddy to hold him ;-) !

Little Man in motion

Nate is crawling everywhere. He also has begun pulling himself up onto ANY object in sight- which keeps us very busy! He is taking steps when we hold him but he's not ready to walk yet (thankfully!). Right now we're just enjoying every second of his new found pastime- crawling everywhere.

He is still enjoying school. He is home with Rich one day a week and I pick him up early another. The other 3 days he is at school for a full day. I am amazed at how much he is learning there. He says "da-da" now and "ba-ba" and some other babbling words, too. Still waiting for ma-ma to come out, any day now ;-) ! What I like most about school is the social time he gets with his friends. He is really drawn to playing with the other kids and intently studying what they are doing.

I know I haven't been blogging lately. My work schedule combined with personal life has got me going 24/7 and I barely can find the time to check my email. I am starting to find ways to make more time though, as I gradually adjust to being a full-time working mom.

The new blog is up....I just haven't had time to launch it yet. Hopefully in the next few weeks it will be up and running.

First week at school...

Nathaniel started school this week, and I returned to work. He attended for 3 days and he seems to really like it. I thought it would be tougher than it actually was- for the both of us. I didn't cry...though I was consumed with thoughts about how he was doing all 3 days. He seems to have adjusted well. He loves to play with the other little ones and explore his new turf there (he's been crawling all over the place there!). On Thursday when I picked him up, I could tell he was getting sick. I couldn't believe he was already sick from school! He has been a real trooper the last few days and appears to have a bad head cold which has now turned into a bad cough. He doesn't have a fever and his spirits have been high. Hopefully he'll build up his immunity quick and get these sicknesses out of the way.

Life is good!!

We've been busy so we needed to post a quick update. We have been having fun! We visited Grammy and Grandpa again the past few days and had a wonderful time. Nate is just a bundle of smiles and always loves to travel and visit with family. He is still teething (no new teeth yet!) so we started his new biscuits a couple weeks ago-he loves them:

Nathan adores his animals...he especially likes the cats. He is just learning how to pet the dogs. At first, he is sort of unsure what to do but he's been smiling when they come near him now. Here is a picture of Nate and Rupert playing:

Nate's still sleeping next to Momma. He loves to snuggle. I wake up in the middle of the night and he's got his arm around me. He is using his transitioning object (monkey!) more frequently too. He has been babbling constantly and he likes to make all sorts of noises with his lips. Our days have been filled with lots of discoveries and learning and Nate is like a little sponge absorbing it all.

It's funny...I wasn't sure how Nathaniel would react to the 'big' bunny. He is not really afraid of anything-- not even our lovely but gigantic rottweiler. I handed him over to the Easter Bunny, and well, he pulled his whiskers and laughed! :-)

Family Visit # 2

We had a great time in NH! Nate got to meet his great grandpa and spend time with Grammy, too. The subarctic temps of central NH didn't keep us from all having a great time. We exchanged gifts with Grammy and Bud (who spoiled us!) and ate lots of good food. Nate loved Grammy's house! He loves to be held by everyone and so he is happiest when there is lots of family around. He loved all the toys he got...especially his new baby boom box...he loved to make the music play. It's amazing how fast he is growing...he easily mimics what we show him now and then will look right at you once he has imitated you....as if to tell us how proud he is. Yesterday we were at the Olive Garden and I found him in my wallet trying to grab my credit cards out- can you believe it!!

Before we left for our visit to NH this weekend, we made some hot fudge. Nate absolutely loves chocolate- he can never get it in his mouth fast enough. A you can see, while I was busy making a mess in the kitchen- Nate fell fast asleep!

Time for a New Chapter

It's hard to find the right words to express how much this journey has meant to us and how truly fulfilled we are now that our son is home and we are a family. The journey was filled with so many emotions along the way....some days were so unbearably difficult and others were nothing short of pure bliss. There were days when I wondered why we had chose this option and there were many, many days when I knew exactly why. Now that we are home, I am reminded every day of why we chose adoption and why we were matched with the little boy who is our son. This blog has served as a great way for us to journal about our experiences and for our family and friends to follow. We have been so grateful for all of the friends we have met since we started our journey...friends we have known for years and also new friends we have made throughout the process.

Having said this, we feel as though we have closed the door on our journey to our son and are blessed to start a new one...life at home with Nathaniel!! So... starting soon this blog will end and we will begin an exciting new chapter in our lives. We will be starting a new journal of our experiences of life at home (aka-new blog!) and, for many reasons, we are choosing to share that with our family and friends -- keeping it more private. If you have followed our journey along the way-- thank you! All of our friends both inside and outside of blogger world- your comments and emails and words of wisdom have meant so much.

What I am most excited about is the future. I await the day when Nathaniel can reflect on this journal and understand how greatly he has changed our lives...when he can see how much he has meant to us from day 1 (and before)....when he can truly understand how he has made us a family and how loved he will always be. I really can't even find the words to express how much love we feel for him...and the happiness he has given us is simply the best experience of our lives.

There will be a couple more posts here before we offically sign off.

Growth Spurt?!

We are in the midst of a serious growth spurt. The little guy has been eating voraciously AND...he has started babbling in sentences! It is so funny to watch. It truly sounds as though he is having a conversation with himself in babble language. He had his nine month immunizations on Friday and he did so well. As long as people are around- he is a happy camper.

We can't believe it's almost been one month since we arrived home. WOW! We are so fortunate that the transition has been smooth. I can honestly say- I have not been sleep deprived once!! However, Nathaniel does not love his crib (much prefers the European pillow top that mom and dad share) and so we have been letting him sleep with us. For the next several weeks we'll just continue to bond as a family and visit with family and friends. Nathaniel will start baby school in April 3 days per week!

Just came through today! I was so excited to feel that little bottom tooth cut through his gum. He was a bit fussy the past couple days and we were wondering what was going on. Now we know- he was cutting his 1st tooth! :-)

Family Visit # 1

OK, OK, I finally have made the time to post about our wonderful trip home to see our family. It didn't help that we were in a location with NO internet service. We were gone for almost a week and it was so great for all of our family (except Mimi) to meet the little guy. On Thursday, he got to see Grandpa again....it had been almost 7 months! He also got to meet Juanita and Great Nanny, too. It was pure joy for me to see Nathaniel interacting with our family... I have been dreaming about that for a long time. On Friday, he got to meet my sister Molly and Alan. They couldn't let go of the little guy and just adored him. We had a big italian dinner at home while Nate enjoyed his cereal and puffs! He was content just to be sitting with the family at the table.

Over the weekend he got to meet Aunt Joanne and all of Rich's family. On Sunday we had a get together for all of Rich's family and we were thrilled that everybody (17 people!) came from all over New England to meet the little guy. His favorite time of the day: of course, what other than 'opening presents' time! He absolutely loves to open presents. I think we've concluded that it's not so much about the gift itself but more the funny noises the paper makes.

I actually drove up to my family's alone with Nathaniel because Rich had to come later due to work. I was a bit worried because it is a 6 hour drive; I was so proud of him- he rode like a champ and slept the entire trip up other than to gulp down a bottle midway. He is great in the car and we've discovered he loves to go out to dinner. He basically wants to eat everything including the prime rib and potatoes on your plate!

We're headed next week to visit Mimi for a few days and then all of the family will have met the little guy...(although now they will all be coming to visit him down here!) I could really get used to life as a stay at home mom...though challenging at times...it is oh so rewarding!

Cheesecake Factory Fun

Since we were all feeling better this week...we headed to the Cheesecake Factory for lunch! Of course, Nathaniel loves cheesecake- his favorite kind: chocolate mousse! He definetely follows in his mom's footsteps...

We are finally settled in and after 2 weeks of being home, we feel like we have adjusted really well. Nathaniel is developing and blossoming so well. He loves to sit up on his own and can feed himself finger foods like a champ now. He can pull his little body to a stand and can hold himself up for minutes at a time. He loves to laugh and is my little 'actor' as I like to call him....when he wants to be held, he knows just how to act to get what he wants. :-)

We're going to be visiting family and friends over the next couple weeks so my posts will be limited. I promise to post updates and lots of family pics when I can.

All is well...

after a long week with sickness (inlcuding me now!) we are all doing better. Nathaniel had his 1st pediatrician appt. and all went well. He didn't mind it at all and did really well with the doctor poking and prodding him. He is adjusting so well to life at home. He is very comfortable with the dogs and the dogs really like him. Junior thinks it is his duty to protect him....yup, he actually likes to guard the pack-n-play!!

It's amazing how quickly time is going. I am enjoying being at home with Nathaniel and I treasure every second. We have a packed schedule next week so I think we will enjoy a quiet weekend at home...

A little 'under the weather'

So...the whole household has pretty much been sick. First it was the dogs with the flu virus. Ben is almost 100%; Junior spent the night in the hospital and came home in the same condition but has recently started showing he is feeling better- which makes us feel so relieved. Then, early this morning Rich came down with the flu and Nate has something...but he's not terribly sick. I think it's just a mild case of the flu. Thankfully (most in part to the flu shot!) I have not gotten sick and am able to help everyone to get better soon.

On top of all the sickness, the weather here has been terrible. It started yesterday with an inch of snow and then turned into freezing rain and eventually to rain this morning. You gotta love February!

Today we were scheduled to go see the international adoption doctor but once Nate wasn't feeling well, I had to reschedule (motherhood lesson # 1- must be flexible!). Tomorrow, we have his first pediatrician appt. which I am looking forward to. We only have a million questions for the doc!

As you can imagine, Nate and Rich spent most of the morning cuddling in bed...

Our first week home

The first week home is going well except that our little furry creatures are sick. Junior and Ben got sick when they came home on Friday and they have a bad strain of doggy influenza. Junior went to the hospital today because he was very ill (we've been up at night with him). He has to spend the night and we are hopeful he will be able to come home in the morning. Geez, just our luck! You get home and typically the adjustment is with the baby but Nathaniel just acts as though he's been here all his short little life. :-) He's doing so well and he is very playful. His two favorite things at home are his giant giraffe, named Geoffrey, and taking a bath in the big tub with mom or dad. He LOVES to swim and I think he is going to be a natural. As soon as he sees the water in the bathtub he starts to kick his little legs and a big smile comes across his face. Needless to say, he doesn't like it when tubby time is over.

There's no place like home....

We're home!

We arrived home last night and the flight and trip home went so smoothly. Nathaniel is a great traveler and he did amazing on the plane. Passing through immigration and customs was very easy, too.

It is so surreal that we are here. It seems like I have already forgotten about the 8.5 months of waiting to bring him home (though I know I never will). Just tonight I was watching him eat his cereal with his dad in his high chair and he was smiling, and playing peek-a-boo with me- as if he has always been here. He loves his exersaucer (as you can see below) and he is mesmerized by the big screen tv!

It was hard to leave beautiful Antigua after a month but being home feels so good. It's really true when they say absence makes the heart grow fonder...

Embassy Day- A Success!

Our embassy appointment today was a success! It was definetely the smoothest part of the entire adoption process. It's so refreshing to know we're completely finished with everything and now we can simply focus on life as a family. :-)

Tonight we celebrated our last night in Guatemala. That's right- we're leaving tomorrow! We changed our flight to leave tomorrow afternoon! Today was bittersweet on many levels. We had a goodbye dinner with Maria and her family. It was truly a wonderful evening. We both were so anxious to see Nathan's response to Maria again. As soon as she held him he began to cry....and about 5 seconds later he smiled and put his arms around her as if to say, "I am so happy to see you again". It was a moment we will never forget; he was so loved by Maria and we couldn't have asked for a better caregiver for our son for the first 7 months of his life.

Lake Atitlan Adventure...

We just spent 2 full days visiting Lake Atitlan in Panajachel. We had an awesome time. Lake Atitlan is a gorgeous lake. The views are beautiful and we were able to spend some time learning about the culture and meeting the people who live around the lake. It's about a 2.5 hour drive from Antigua. Early Sunday morning the shuttle picked us up and we arrived at the lake around 10am. We checked into our hotel and hung out by the pool and palm trees- the weather was perfect as usual.

From there we headed to lunch overlooking the lake and walked around the city of Panajachel. Most of the people here are indigenous Mayans who speak only Mayan dialects. Later in the day, we headed to Pana Rock (just like Hard Rock!) to watch the superbowl. What a bummer of a bowl! It was a good game but just like our Red Sox passion, we are BIG patriot fans!

Monday was a long day...but well worth it. We got up, had breakfast at the hotel and then met the boat tour operator to leave for the lake. We headed out on the lake to visit 4 villages: San Marcos, San Pedro, San Juan, and Santiago. Wow- they were amazing. We really got a sense of what these villages are like. They are very poor and there is little, if any economy (other than tourism) that exists within these villages. Most of the natives survive on tourism through selling fruit, vegetables, and tortillas. There was some beautiful architecture and the views of the lake from these villages were stunning. Our favorite was San Marcos and San Juan...they were both very quaint little villages with extremely interesting history. While visiting San Juan, school had finished for the day and so we got to meet all the school children...who, of course, were adorable and so happy to see the baby, too. They gathered around Nate in the stroller like they hd never seen a baby before; it was really cute.

We then headed back to Pana and caught the 4pm shuttle back to Antigua. Nate was perfect in the shuttle. The ride is not for the faint of heart and he was such a trooper. If you are afraid of heights or extremely fast driving over bumpy roads through indian villages- this ride may not be for you. But we all did fine and it was a great trip.

We're together at last...

Rich arrived safely on Wednesday and we have been having an amazing time. We're exploring Antigua and spending time together as a family.

Nate just LOVES his dad. He went right to him once we met him at the airport and it was like they had never been apart. Thankfully, they never will again!

This weekend we are going to Lake Atitlan to see the lake and the mountains, and so much more. Looking forward to posting pics about our adventure...

With a very easy subject! I thought we would practice taking photos since we will take Nathan to get his 9 month pictues as soon as we get home. I think they came out pretty good- though I need to get better with understanding the lighting on my camera and can fix that when I get home. He's so easy going and just eats the camera right up!

We have been so busy the last few days. It seems we are out to lunch each day with some new friends we have met. Last night we had pizza with our new neighbor (also adopting) from Dubai and this weekend we went out to dinner with some other friends. Nate loves the attention he gets from all the people and he is so good when we go out. Yesterday we went to the market and bought a few things to take back. I got Nate a mayan sling which I can wrap him in if he falls asleep. The weather continues to be- perfect. Honestly, the past few days have been mid-70's without a cloud in the sky. What I would do have this climate at home...

Tommorrow is the big day....Rich arrives at the airport at 2:30pm! Nate and I will be there to meet him and it will be such a relief to all be together at last. We have a busy week planned here in Antigua before we head to the Marriott in GC next Tuesday for our final appt.

Oopps, I got caught!

I know I am probably biased as a mom, but Nate is learning and developing so well. He is such a smart little guy. He is getting into everything lately and is very active. He loves to play and move around. He has discovered, and very well, that when you hide an object- it still exists! I've tried to trick him a few times into believing I hid a toy....well, he does everything in his power to turn his whole body toward it.

He's also learned that there is other food besides formula, cereal, and baby food. Anytime I eat he uses all the strength in his body to try and grab what I am eating. It's so cute... he had his first taste of Domino's pizza tonight (didn't actually eat it but he tasted it in his mouth). I think he thought it tasted better than his pears and apples!

The missing shoe

We've been here almost 4 weeks and as of early this past week- we had managed not to lose any shoes. My mom gave Nate some really cute shoes on her trip here and while returning home from town earlier this week- I realized we lost one.

I was talking with my mom later in the week and she suggested I retrace my steps and find it. I had to explain that it would be gone (Guatemalan's generally pick up clothing, etc. that is fair game on the side of the road).

So, fast forward to today. I had written off the cute teddy shoe and figured it was lost in Antigua forever. I really didn't give it a second thought. After having lunch today with some friends, we stopped by the farmacia for some baby wipes. I requested the wipes and got my money out to pay the cashier. Just as I looked up, the woman cashier looked at me and said, "is this your baby shoe"? I said- "yes"!!! I couldn't believe that the shoe had made its way back to us without even being looked for. I guess we were meant to have that cute little teddy shoe!

It's official- we're PINK! We're coming home!

OUR Embassy appointment is February 6th with our Visa pick-up on the 7th. We'll be flying home on February 8th. Nathaniel will be comfy and cozy in his home on his 9th month birthday!!

This has been a process filled with joy, sadness, and significant uncertainty, but it has ultimately been the most fulfilling journey either of us will ever embark upon. We have been truly blessed throughout this process with the support of our family and friends and for that we are eternally grateful. What a life-changing journey...

Rich is coming early next week!

This is the El Arco Restaurant in Antigua...the ambiance is beautiful and the food is excellent too.

One of my favorite places to eat and to visit here...Casa Santo Domingo- an old convent transformed into a beautiful hotel and restaurant. There is a wedding here almost every day of the year.

This is a typical Guatemalan "Chicken Bus" which is used for public transportation here. It acquired the name "Chiken Bus" because when people travel in these buses they put their belongings on the top. This includes everything from chickens to furniture, to people!

This is San Lazaro cemetary, one block from my apartment. It is a beautfiful cemetary and a very peaceful place.

On Saturday night, Nathaniel and I went to dinner with our friend, B and her family. B is adopting a little girl and lives in a home only 2 blocks from us. We get together often and had a great time at dinner on Saturday night. We ate with her parents who are visiting for 2 weeks. This picture is in Cafe Mediterraneo: a must-visit while in Antigua!

Finally, after a long weekend, we're tired and it's time to rest!

Good News....but no appointment yet

First, the good news- Nathaniel's feeling better. I think the medicine is starting to work its magic. I'm so relieved!

And, secondly, what else to report but more waiting...we did not get our appt. today. This does not mean we will get a later appt.- it only means we will have less notice to plan for Rich to come down and to book our return ticket. Looking into my crystal ball (combined with some obsessive stalking of other boards)... I think our appt. might just be on the 6th of February. I hate to make predictions when this process is so ridiculously irrational, but we're so close now I just have to. :-)

The US Embassy will be closed on Monday for the MLK holiday. Looks like Tuesday might be the big day. Keep your fingers crossed for us!

Hallelujah! We are one step away from our final appointment. There is a good chance we may have that date tomorrow. Fingers crossed!

We've both been battling sickness here. Nathaniel has a tonsil infection and I have had a sore throat (which I think are one in the same). I'm doing fine but he's been pretty sick the past couple days. He's on an antibiotic and he seems to be doing better today. I'm hoping he is able to kick this thing by the weekend.

An afternoon at Hotel Antigua...

We are definitely learning more and more about Antigua. On Saturday afternoon, we headed to Hotel Antigua to play on the swings and have lunch. It is such a beautiful place and Nate couldn't love the swings any more. :-)

All is going well here. The weather continues to be the same- low 70's and partly sunny every day. It just dawned on me that I've been here 16 days today and it hasn't rained once. Pretty good weather for the middle of January. On sunday Nate came down with a fever- which I am almost certain is a result of his final vaccination last week. It lasted 2 days and now he just seems to have a little cold. Yesterday I awoke to a sore throat...but I'm feeling better today. Our days are quiet and relaxing. I am definetely getting the bonding time with Nate that I have always wanted. He is so easy to love.

Well, the lab in the US emailed me yesterday to inform us that our sample had arrived on Monday morning and that it was being processed. They said it would arrive at the US Embassy in Guate on Thursday. So, realistically, we are looking at getting an appointment date for our FINAL appt before Wednesday of next week. Within a week- we should know our return home date! Stay tuned for the details...

My special little boy...

I am feeling a real sense of relief and it's just hitting me. It seems surreal that this journey to bring Nathaniel home is ALMOST done. I feel so grateful to be blessed with such a wonderful son. We are so lucky.

We checked 2nd DNA off the list yesterday, too. We also had our final medical appt. with Dr. Hagen, one of the US Embassy physicians. It went really well. He got a clean bill of health! My little guy is 16 lbs and 27 inches long.

Now we wait for the final appt. I'm guessing our appt will be sometime around the 6th of February and we'll be home within 2 days of that. I will keep you posted.

In the meantime, we're enjoying our time here! Today we went to the playground at Hotel Antigua with some fostering friends. Nate LOVED the swings... I think we'll be going back tomorrow. Happy Friday. :-)

Nathaniel would like to share his thoughts on the day...

Today was a long day but it paid off. We waited 3 hours at the municipality and finally....the civil registrar allowed us to get the birth certificate. Nathan was issued a birth certificate when he was born in his birth name. This new birth certificate shows his name as HOYT and his parents as US! After we got the birth certificate, my driver and friend Claudia and I went to lunch with my attorney. We then went next door to get the Passport -- and it was a breeze. It took about 30 minutes total. This was a full day! Tomorrow we are going to lunch with Claudia and then to the US Embassy for the 2nd DNA test. This will show that Nathan is the same baby he was back in August when the 1st DNA was taken. Then he will have his final medical exam by a US Embassy physician. After that, there is nothing else to do except wait for the DNA results to get back to the Embassy. That should take 7-10 days from tomorrow and then we'll have our appt. date 2-3 days after that. I am anticipating an appt. the 1st week of February (1st-7th). Rich will be coming down as SOON as we get the appt. We should be home by the 10th (of course, if all stays on track from here).

Meeting with Mayor (or not)

Today we went to the town where Nathaniel was born to kindly request our birth certifcate which we have been waiting for since 12/3. We waited 1 hour only to have the mayor walk out of his office and down the stairs without even acknowledging us. And we even had an appt! Well, we weren't successful today but we are not giving up. We will get the birth certificate. We just don't know when....so, for those wondering when we will be coming home....we don't know. I am praying to hear something in the next week or so! Also**** this is a very rare problem in Guatemalan adoption. I have done extensive research and there are 3 towns where the mayors are not cooperative in issuing birth certificates. Generally, a birth certficate is issued in 1-3 weeks or so....but with these towns, there are delays due to the corruption of those in charge. This is one reason I fully believe that Guatemalan adoptions are in need of some reform. The govt. must have better control over these mayors who simply decide they don't like adoption and as a result will cause lengthy delays. Completely wrong and in need of major reform...I pray that the new adoption law will address issues like this.

In other news, we moved on Sunday from the East side of Antigua to the West side. We were in a very nice hotel but it was small and we needed more space. So, we rented a studio apartment in a condo complex and it's perfect. It has everything we need and more. It's about 8 blocks from central park.

Tomorrow we are going to the pediatrician's office. Nathan's having his monthly check-up.

I am still amazed at how happy of a baby he truly is. He is always smiling and loves to be held. I am counting my blessings each day.

To my partner of 10 years and husband of 6 years, today! 6 years ago today Rich and I were married in a small little church in Vermont. We celebrated all weekend long and then set off for a week in Paris where we had an amazing time.

I am truly blessed and couldn't ask for a better husband than Rich. We have been through a lot in the past 10 years- moving away from family, the tragic loss of my brother, changes in career, the loss of 2 beloved pets, the journey to our adoption....and so much more.

I also feel so thankful that Nathaniel will have such a wonderful Dad to be loved by and to learn from. That is one of the things I admire most about Rich...he is the most honest and committed person I think I will ever know. So, from across the miles tonight- Happy 6th Anniversay Hun!

P.S. I just wanted to add- there was an earthquake here last night. According to the news, it was 5.4 on the scale. Our whole house shook and I was concerned for about 30 seconds until it stopped. It was brief and there did not appear to be any damage nor was anyone hurt. The weather across the world is so unpredictable right now and Guatemala is no exception. Today was about 70 and partly sunny but it was windy. The power goes out about 10 times a day but thankfully does eventually come back on.

Well, sort of. This morning we awoke and our innkeeper was so excited that there was snow on the top of the volcano.

It actually isn't cold here, bit it is chilly. Today was only about 60 for a high and it was very windy. The whole country lost power last night for at least 2 hours. Nathaniel enjoyed modeling his hats today

Straight from La Antigua Guatemala!! It's been a whirlwind 2 days but we have settled in-- and I am loving it! I terribly miss Rich and my pooches already but I know we will see them soon. In the meantime, I have a little bundle of love that brings me so much. Nathan is doing wonderfully. He is such a happy little guy...

We made it to the hotel last night @ 6pm. We love it here. Maria Elena, the innkeeper, is so accommodating. We have everything here we need and more. It's in a perfect location only about 2 blocks from central park.

The New Year's eve festivities here in Antigua are overwhelming and amazing. The Guatemalan people know how to ring in the New Year right! Although we were back in our room before 7pm, we did walk around this evening and got to experience the sights and sounds of the celebation. Right now the fireworks are going off near the Arch and CNN is here filming it all.

Yesterday was a special day for Nathan as he was united with us forever! We love him so much and we feel SO incredibly blessed to have been given the best gift of all in 2007. I can't think of anything else that could top it.

After packing almost all day, I have 3 full suitcases, a deluxe stroller, a diaper bag and myself to get to Guatemala! I've got some good books for the plane, and hopefully after a long nap, I'll arrive in Guatemala tomorrow without any problems. It's finally come when we will be together forever. It sort of feels like a dream because of all the waiting-- but the time has finally come and I couldn't be happier!

An Update...

Well, it really wasn't a surprise but we did not get our birth certifcate this week. The request for Nathan's birth certificate was submitted on 12/3. Monday will be 4 weeks. It is supposedly taking at least 6 weeks because the mayor is anti-adoption and doesn't believe in American's adopting children from Guatemala (yes, this is otherwise referred to as corruption). We received word today that our attorney has been going weekly to check on the status and has another meeting with the mayor next Wednesday after the holiday. I know we will get our birth certificate but it is not likely for another 2-3 weeks. I am in communication with my agency and have plans to go to the civil registry myself the second week of January with my attorney if we do not have a birth certificate.

I was frustrated today over the fact that people keep asking me, "Now, could something go wrong and prevent your child from coming home". I know people mean well and most people are not involved in the complexities of international adoption, but I do get frustrated with these questions. Of course, Nathan will come home but it will happen in the right time and we have no control over that. I am thankful for all my friends and family who are always so supportive, but sometimes I am just so perplexed at the questions I am asked. Ok, vent over!

MORE IMPORTANTLY- my life as a childless woman has been flashing before my eyes....when I drove home tonight, I realized it was the last time I would drive home without Nathan in the backseat....I realized that tomorrow would be my last time eating dinner in my house without a baby...I CAN'T believe the time has come. Bright and early Sunday morning I am flying to Guatemala and will arrive there @ Noon. I will have Nathan mid-afternoon and we'll be settling into a life in Antigua until the time comes for us to come home. I am really excited to have all this bonding time with him and to explore Antigua. I am in contact with other women who are fostering and we have plans to meet weekly for lunch and more! It should be a true adventure and an experience I will never forget.

Tomorrow I head to Vermont to spend time with my family for a long weekend. I love Christmas. It's always been such a celebrated holiday in my family and Rich and I hope to pass that on to Nathan. As Nate's 1st Christmas approaches, I do feel a sense of sadness that we will not be spending it with him. However, I am comforted that he will spend his 1st Christmas with his mama Maria in Guatemala. We'll have all the Christmas' to come.

BUSY weekend

It was a busy weekend! I started my Christmas shopping and I finished all in one weekend. I was brave- I don't recommend shopping at Target 9 days before Christmas in the middle of the day! It took me 30 minutes to get out of the parking lot. :-)

The holidays have come so fast. This past week Rich put up the Christmas tree and we decorated the house. We have a dept. 56 village collection and I love it. Rich made a tradition to buy a new piece every year.

We went to our neighborhood holiday party today and then came back to finish Nate's room. It's all done with a few exceptions. I ironed all his bedding and got everything in order. His curtain is up and we just need to hang one more piece. Then, I'll dust it and it will be complete.

I came to the realization today that this was my last full weekend at home before I leave to go down to get Nate for my extended pick-up trip. Next weekened I'm going to Vermont to visit my family for the holiday. Rich will stay home due to his work schedule and then I'll be back so that we can spend Christmas day together. Then, I finish my last 3 days at work and I'm off. I'm flying direct this trip out of JFK.

Finally, I talked with Maria this week through our translator. I am starting to feel so sad that Nate will be leaving Maria. She has cared for him wonderfully since he was 2 days old on May 10th of this year. I can't even begin to imagine the bond they have and how truly difficult it will be to say goodbye. I feel fortunate that Maria and I have connected so well. She is such a caring woman. While we were talking about meeting and saying goodbye on the phone, she began to cry. All she could say was how happy she was that we were going to give him such a good home, but that she would miss him terribly. It was clear to me in this conversation how much she really loves him and how much she has given to him and to us. We could not be more grateful to her. I promised her we would forever stay in touch and I hope to get back down to visit her in the next few years. I'm putting together a scrapbook of pictures of the last 6 months since we received Nate's referral. I think this will be the perfect goodbye gift...

I'm here! It's been such a busy week I've barely had time to keep my head above water. I wish I was reporting that we have a birth certificate....but we don't. We were told by our attorney that it would take a week and that we were submitted on 12/3. We should have had our birth certificate this past Monday...but updates came in from our attorney today and we didn't get one. Both Rich and I thought it was interesting that our attorney said it would only take a week as most birth certificates from where Nate was born take 6 weeks. I requested an update from our attorney again this week so we should hear something in the next couple days.

The good news is that I CAN'T believe I am leaving in 2 1/2 weeks to see Nate forever!! I will be meeting Maria at the Marriott on 12/30 and then we'll whisk away to Antigua....I'm really looking forward to spending some quality time together before we go home. At this point, we realistically don't expect to get home until the end of January. The embassy is officially not issuing PINK appts. until the 2nd of January already....so we're just hoping for an appt. in January. The holidays are sure to add at least 2 weeks to the process. Especially with how close we are now. We'll see.

I called Maria myself last night. My spanish is rusty but we could communicate. She was out shopping and said Nate is doing really well. His hair is growing like crazy and he's a happy boy. He LOVES his cereal. Just hearing that was enough to make my day. I've started getting all my things together for the trip. This time is different than all the other trips because I don't know how long I will be down there...so, I'm getting a cell phone and bringing everything and the house, too!

I can't believe it's getting this close to Christmas! The time is flying. I was away for work this week so I haven't posted much. I talked with Maria last night and Nate is doing really well. He loves his cereal and he's over 15lbs now. You'd never know it because he is a peanut but he loves to eat-- he's going to fit in perfectly with mom and dad! :-)

We hope to hear an update this week on the birth certificate. Once that is received, we should have our embassy appt. in about 3 weeks or so. We are heading to GC on the 30th of this month and will be staying until the end. We plan to leave the day after we get our visa. We are hoping for less than a 2 week stay but as we have always said- this process is unpredictable. We did inquire about our birth certificate because the civil registries in Guatemala can be unpredictable also, and our attorney assured us it would only take him a week. That would mean we should hear news this week. We'll be staying at the Marriott if our stay is less than a week; if it's longer- we'll be staying at a bed and breakfast in Antigua - Hotel Casa Ovalle.

It's Official!

More great news to share (cue the drum roll please!): as of 11/30/07- Nathaniel is OFFICIALLY a Hoyt and is legally our son!! His birth mother signed off for the fourth and final time. This is GREAT news! Now we are just waiting on our birth certificate which we have been told will take one week. From there, it's 2-3 weeks to travel! Once we have the birth certificate, our attorney will get a passport for Nate and then submit the file to the US embassy. All that will need to be completed at this point is the 2nd and final DNA test on just Nate. That's a breeze! We'll have a more specific timeframe once we know the DNA has been completed.

Nate's coming home!!

We have been approved by PGN to complete our adoption in Guatemala. I couldn't even begin to describe the happiness that we feel from this news. I called PGN this morning and Laura told me "Congratulations, you have been approved"!!!!! She told me we were approved yesterday and our attorney picked up our file today! Wow- I can't even believe it- I am officially speechless. It was one day shy of 8 weeks with NO KO's issued- we are SO thankful! We are now just waiting for our agency to confirm this wonderful news.

Hallelujah! Hallelujah! Hallelujah!

I will post more this weekend about the process from here but most important is that our little guy will be coming home in 5-7 weeks!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

We're having such a good time it's hard to believe we leave tomorrow afternoon. We have had such a wonderful time meeting other families including those from our own agency. We are so pleased with how healthy and happy Nate is....he's such a good little boy. Tomorrow we will meet Maria and her family for lunch and say goodbye. We are very, very hopeful this will be our last goodbye- FOREVER!

I'll post lots more pics when we get home. We took Christmas photos today and they came out awesome. :)

Right now we are still waiting to get out of PGN. I feel like the time has gone by so fast....until this week where I have felt a sense of urgency to get OUT. We are currently waiting to be signed in PGN (meaning the legal review in Guatemala will be completed). We are fairly confident we'll have news to share this coming week. If we are successful in getting out of PGN, Nate will be coming home in about 5-7 weeks. It will be so hard to say goodbye again tomorrow but we are so fortunate to have had all these visit trips...I feel very blessed. I pray and hope we'll have good news to share in the next week or so!

Hi- we're here! I wish I could have posted sooner but we've been so busy! All was uneventful with our arrival...until we arrived. When we got to the Marriott yesterday to check in- they told us they did not have a room for us! This was after they had just confirmed our reservation via email 3 days ago...and we booked the reservation 2 months ago. So, they took us to the Grand Tikal (another hotel here) and comp'ed the night for us. We weren't crazy about the GT but it was Ok for the night. They told us they had a crib but then 3 hours later they finally admitted they didn't have one! This morning the Marriott picked us up and brought us back and we were upgraded to a larger room with access to the executive lounge. Not too bad! We're glad to be back to our home base.

On to much more important things- we're so happy to be a family of 3 again! We are just loving every minute with Nate! He brings us SO much joy...he is such a happy baby. He is also teething-- no teeth coming through yet- but he is in the early stages and all he wants to do is put his hand in his mouth. We're trying teethers and other things to help him. He doesn't seem to be in pain or irritated- just wanting to put everything in his mouth. We just love every second with him...he is absolutely perfect for us. When we met him wih Maria yesterday he went right to our arms without even a second of hesitation....I think he might be starting to rememeber his mom and dad!

Anyhow, he is peacefully napping now with Daddy--whom he just loves to spend time with. Enjoy the pics!

Keeping the faith...

Hanging on by a thread...BUT we're keeing the faith through this process. Gosh, I was just emailing with my fellow FTIA'er pal J., (her son Nick is with Nate) and she was saying how difficult this stage was- I couldn't agree more. For us, it's the most difficult part.

I talked with Maria tonight! Nate is doing wonderful. I can't believe it- he now weighs a whopping 14lbs 12 ounces at 6 months old! I would definetely title that a 'growth spurt'. Last month he was barely at 13lbs. He is doing really well. We are meeting Maria and her family at the hotel when we arrive. We'll have some coffee (the best!) and spend some time talking before we get Nate all to ourselves for 5 days. Not long at all and we'll have him in our arms...

Please keep us in your thoughts over the next week or two--we really need it! Our file should be making its way to Senor Barrios for final approval. Since we haven't received a previo- it is very likely by this time that we will make it to his desk. What happens there is yet to be seen, but, there is an 80% chance of any case getting an approval from him. Our potential is good- keep us in your prayers! Today marks 6 weeks and counting....praying like I've never prayed before...my heart literally hurts from all this waiting...please let us out soon. :-)

Whirlwind Weekend!

I can't even believe how fast time has been going lately. This past week just seems like a blur. This weekend was wonderful on many levels and I'd love to share the details. Ok, here's the play-by-play action (warning- long post) :-)

On Friday @ 4pm I left my office and drove 8 hours to my sister's house in NH. I thought I was seeing double by the end of the trip! Caution: not a good idea to work a full day and drive in the pouring rain and darkness in the late evening hours. I made it there safely though and all was OK. On Saturday morning my sister and I headed to my mom's house to "do some serious shopping". My mom called my sister that morning and told her that their cat was sick and that he needed to go to the vet. So, we should just come to her house instead of shopping and maybe we'd be able to go later. Well, we arrived at my mom's....only her cat wasn't sick and there were no intentions of going shopping either....it was a surprise baby shower!

You think the weekend would be over by now. Not quite! After the shower at my mom's my sister and I left and drove to Boston where my dad's family lives. We met them for a late dinner at the Cheesecake Factory (always so good!). The next day we got up and going early because we had another shower! This one was planned and we had such a great time.

Ok, so I haven't been posting a lot lately. We've been busy. Getting Nathan's nursery ready, doing stuff around the house, working! There is not much new to report. We are SO ready for our trip- only 11 more days and we'll have him in our arms again!

There has been some notable news though on the Guatemalan Adoption front... I am attaching the JCICS report but- the gist of it is that it appears as though the Hague will be pushed back in Guatemala until April, 2008. It also appears very likely that there will be a grandfather clause- meaning all in-process adoptions will be able to continue under the old system. We feel very confident that we'll have Nathan home before April of 2008- so this is good news for us and all of the children and families currently involved in Guatemalan adoption. While this is not finalized, the probablity of the Hague being pushed back and the Guatemalan Congress approving the grandfather clause seems very good. Here's the info on JCICS

EDITED TO ADD: Guatemala eleceted a new President on Sunday. Hopefully this will mean positive change when he takes office in January, 2008. Read more about Guatemala's next President...

Meet our foster family...

Starting from the left...Blanca, who is a neighbor of our foster family. She speaks english and used to live in California- she's really helpful with the translating. Then Maria, the best foster mom ever! And her 16 year old daughter Ana who is so incredibly sweet. The only person missing from the picture is her son, Alberto. He works as an electrician and couldn't make it to our breakfast goodbye. Ana is in high school although she is now on vacation. Guatemala's schools run January through October.

We talked with Maria last night and Nathan is doing very well. He's growing along well. He was just at the doc's office yesterday and he said Nathan was in excellent condition. He is an absolute peanut but tracking along in the 5th-10th percentile just beautifully. Maria said he looks like he may start teething soon- just in time for our next trip! There are some days where I feel really optimistic about the progress we've made and other days where I wonder when it will ever be over. I recognize these emotions are part of this rollercoaster but I am so ready to get off....at least get me off this PGN ride... I did call PGN again a couple days ago and we are still with the 2nd reviewer, no previo's. I will call again in 10 days or so and get another update. The longer we go without a previo, the better chance we have of getting out the first time. If we don't get a previo in the next few weeks, we have a good chance of getting an approval around the first week of December (though I am completely prepared for a previo). I wish it wasn't so unpredictable, but hey, it's all part of PGN fun... :-)

Cold nights and damp days- fall is definitely in the air. While I love the inevitable changing of the seasons- I absolutely dread the cold weather (and this is coming from a Vermonter!). When I got home from work tonight, the house was really cold and I bundled up to stay warm. Hope we're in for a mild winter! Nate prefers to be bundled and swaddled....he's in for a real treat when we welcome him to what winter is in PA. In Guatemala, winter means 60 degrees. In Pennsylvania, winter means 20 degrees. Ahh, what I'd give to have a 60 degree winter....

Just perfect for a cold night- a warm bath!

Well, no surprise here....I called PGN yesterday as it had been 2 weeks. I spoke with Laura and she said- "you are still with the 2nd reviewer". She said we will probably be with the 2nd reviewer for 3 more weeks before we are sent for a possible approval to Barrios. Of course, that's if we do not receive a previo. We were only with the 1st reviewer for 4 days- so we have progressed pretty well. So, the good news...we haven't received a previo yet...the bad news, I'm impatient and want out today!!

I'm going to be calling the end of next week for another update. Keep your fingers crossed. :-)

Grateful for the little things...

I took some time today and reflected on all that I have to be thankful for. So many things of course....but I noticed it's the little things that always mean the most. I am thankful to everyone who has supported us on our journey -- all the emails, notes, and acts of kindness have meant so much to us. Our journey wouldn't be complete without our family and friends.

I am also particularly endebted to my husband. I am fortunate to have a partner in life who shares so many of the same beliefs and values....and who has joined me in this journey every step of the way. I give him so much credit because I know how big of a pain in the *$% I have been throughout this process- and he always puts up with me. I would not want to be walking these miles without him. :-)

I'm thankful for the little things too. A walk tonight with my neighbor in the brisk autumn dusk with my dog on his 3rd birthday. Last night when I was talking with Maria- she mentioned that Nathan only liked to play with the toys that make noises, and that he would simply ignore the other ones. It made me laugh- and it made me happy....that he can choose what he likes. All of this got me thinking back to when I used to hear people say it's the simple things in life that make you happy. I'm not sure I really grasped it then....but I'm thankful I do now.

What is PGN, anyway?

Of course, many of the abbreviations used in adoption sound like "code" to those not familiar with the process. PGN or Procuradoria General del Nacion is essentially the solicitor general's office. They have an adoption unit which reviews and approves or rejects adoptions. When a file is submitted, it will be reviewed by reviewer # 1 to ensure that all the information required is present. This generally takes 1-2 weeks. Once you pass the 1st reviewers approval, you move on to the 2nd reviewers desk. The 2nd reviewer will review your file to ensure that it is in compliance with Guatemalan law. If they don't like what they see, they can issue you a "previo" or "kick out" and ask that corrections be made. The length of time to correct a previo ranges from 1 day to several months. Generally, a file is approved or kicked out by the second reviewer within 6 weeks. There are three 2nd reviewers for all of the cases in PGN. Once you are approved by the 2nd reviewer, your case moves to Senor Barrios who approves your adoption as final through the PGN. Typically, Senor Barrios will take 1-2 weeks to sign off and approve. He can also issue a kick out for corrections but that is rare. Once you've made it to him, there is a good chance you will be approved soon. At any point during this process, if you receive a previo, you start back at the 8 week timeframe again. We are 2 weeks now into our PGN wait-- so the longer we go with staying on the 2nd reviewer's desk without a previo- the better likelihood we have of being approved through PGN in 8 weeks. We are praying that we will be approved sometime before the 1st of December. Keep your fingers crossed for us! I'll be calling again the end of next week to get an update from PGN.

A Day in Antigua

We're IN PGN!!!

I am so excited to share this news. I just found out this morning. I spoke with the reputable english speaking woman named Laura at PGN. She confirmed that our file was submitted on Friday the 5th and she gave us our file number. She said we were already with the 2nd reviewer and that I should call back in 2 weeks to get an update. My understanding is that it typically takes a week or more with the first reviewer before you move on to the 2nd reviewer. Our file was reviewed by an experienced attorney before being submitted so I am hoping and praying this will make a difference. If the 2nd reviewer finds something he doesn't like he can issue you a "previo" or a kick out basically requiring you to fix a piece of your dossier. This can delay your process a week to several months depending on the severity. Some families get previos and others do not. Once the 2nd reviewer approves your file, your file gets sent to "Senor Barrios" who is essentially the final signature on the file that approves it through PGN. We are optimistic that we can be out of PGN before Christmas-- though we know anything can happen in this process. Once out of PGN- it is typically about 8 weeks until we can bring Nate home.

I'll be calling PGN in 2 weeks to get an update! Hope MR. Barrios is feeling generous as the holidays approach!

This has really made our week and so good to know we almost have a week in PGN down. All the closer to bringing our little guy home! :-)

A Bittersweet Goodbye. . .

It was really tough yesterday leaving Nathan behind. It doesn't seem to get easier either. While I know he is in good hands with Maria. . . I still am weighted down by the sadness of having to leave him. The time we spend together is priceless and I wouldn't trade it for the world. My mom really enjoyed getting to know the little guy. He's getting big but he is still a tiny peanut! He just turned 5 months old yesterday. We are always so sad to leave but optimistic that the process is moving along swiftly. We should be receiving word of PGN any day now. . . we're hopeful. We were told last week by our agency that our attorney had hired an independent experienced attorney in Guatemala to review his files before entering the PGN-- or the final court in Guatemala. They said it would take a week for this to occur-so we should be in. We are confident that this will help us to move more smoothly through the final process of PGN. Also, our attorney has also had many PGN outs in the last few weeks which is very encouraging.

I also have some really great pics that Maria gave us from the disposable cameras. . . it seems as though they play "dress up" with him when they take his pics. His outfits are always strewn across the couch or bed! HA!

Guess Who??!!

Guess who....Nathan, Mom, and Grandma all in Guatemala! We arrived safely and uneventfully and are enjoying every minute of our time together. Yesterday we met Maria for lunch and Grandma got to hold Nathan for the first time-it was great. We had an early dinner and then.... tried to go to bed. Well, let's just say it was a LONG night. However, we did get a few hours of sleep and we had a great day today. We spent time at the pool and around the hotel. We went to the Market with an FTIA pal too. . . the weather was perfect-- very little humidity and clear skies around 80 degrees. We went to the most wonderful restaurant for dinner tonight. The shuttle from the restaurant came and picked us up. The restaurant is Porta Del Angel and it overlooks the entire city from a mountain! Incredible views. The food was excellent- Nate slept through the whole event. :-)

The little guy just fell asleep and I think I'm going to take advantage of it and get some rest myself. I have a feeling he will do much better tonight- the first night is always tough. He's just perfect for us- I really noticed a difference in him this time- he's getting bigger and his features are developing more now... he is adorable! I know, I'm bragging-- but I can't help it. :-)

Tomorrow we go to Antigua for the afternoon and I'm looking forward to it. No word if we've entered PGN yet but I suspect we'll be in by next week. I can't wait to get in so we can get out!

The little guy is so fun to be around- just love spending time with him. Better sign off before I get too delirious....goodnight from Guate.

I'm very thankful to be leaving in about 8 hours to see the sweet little guy. It's only been 4 weeks since we visited but it feels like an eternity. We'll have him in our arms at 4pm ET tomorrow! As usual- I'll be sure to get lots of pics.

I didn't hear an update on PGN this week but sometimes it takes a while to hear (1-3 weeks) after PA notice. I've noticed from timelines that our attorney is very good about submitting to PGN within a few days of PA. Since we are already out of FC, we should be in no later than early next week. I'm hoping we're already in and just haven't heard. I'll post as soon as I hear the good news. Adios for now!

I honestly couldn't have asked for a better day!

I am so excited to share that we received Preapproval today from the US Embassy in Guatemala. This is absolutely fantastic! We expected it around the 18th of October- so 23 days was incredibly fast and a welcomed surprise. I came home from the shower around 6:45 and opened my inbox. I was slowly reading through the 10 or so emails-- and there it was! To put it mildly, I was shocked! Needless to say, both of the dogs thought I was crazy as I was screaming with sheer joy as I ran to find the phone to call Rich! This is wonderful. It means that the US has approved us to move into the final stage of the adoption which is called- PGN. PGN is the body within Guatemala which approves adoptions. Some families get approved in 2 weeks and others in 6 months. You just never know. Our attorney seems to average around 12-14 weeks- but I'm told he's done better. We'll see what magic he can work for us...and...hopefully we'll be in PGN this week. This news just made our weekend and upcoming trip, too! It will feel so good visiting Nathan knowing we're in PGN.

Secondly, my first shower was a blast. Did I mention I have the best neighbors? Cathy and Joan- thank you so very much for all your efforts. The spread these ladies put out for us was amazing. My friend Cathy made a Noah's Ark cake from scratch which was delicious-- and almost too pretty to eat. We received some really nice gifts from our neighbors which I know the little guy will get lots of use out of. He got his first car- a walking jeep-- I can just see him out in the yard with it next summer! :-)

Glimmer of Hope

Today, we received a couple tidbits of uplifting news in light of the recent developments. First, the DOS updated their statement to include this:

At this time, over 3000 applications for adoption from Guatemala are in process with USCIS or the Guatemala government. The U.S. government is asking the Government of Guatemala to allow such cases, now pending, to proceed to completion without additional requirements.

Secondly, we have a contact down in Guatemala who I emailed regarding his thoughts on this. He is a very reputable attorney and has been so helpful to us. He has been working on Guatemalan adoptions for some time. He is not an attorney facilitating adoptions but rather assists families if they have concerns with their own attorney, or even just questions in general. He is from Guatemala but speaks perfect English. Here's what he said in his email tonight:

"Don’t worry about it. We talked to officials in Guatemala and also in the US about it.I think they went a little bit too far when they say current cases might be affected. According to the Guatemalan Constitution which rules all the legislation, a case that started under certain regulation has to finish by law under that legislation. The new laws (adoption law and Hague) can only be applied when they become effective to cases started after that happened. Anyway, we’ll keep you updated on anything new. Hope you get the preapproval soon!"

I was very encouraged by both of these statements. We hope more news will come forward as October begins.

Finally, tomorrow is my 1st baby shower! I am so excited. I have truly wonderful neighbors and they have gone to so much effort to organize an 'all neighborhood' shower. I really appreciate what they have done and I am looking so forward to enjoying it! Fall is in the air today. The sun is setting and the air has a welcoming crisp tinge. The leaves are quickly falling. I'm wishing you all a wonderful weekend! Well, I wish I had sat down to post more positive news. But, there have been some very unnerving events that have recently unfolded on the Guatemalan adoption front. I think it's important to talk about them as they could mean major changes in the adoption front going forward- including our journey to Nathan. I'll do my best to give you the cliff notes here. Disclaimer too-- I am NOT an expert on the subject. :-)

For many years, both the United States and Guatemala have indicated that they will become Hague Accredited which basically means adoptions within Guatemala will be processed according to the Hague standards. Of course, this could be very good for Guatemalan adoptions as it would create more organization. However, it is yet to be determined what Hague procedures are or mean to those in process. More recently, the United Stated has indicated that it will initiate the Hague on Janaury 1st of 2008- which will make it effective sometime around April 1st of 2008. Up until recently, it had also been the consensus that Guatemala would also become Hague ready at this time as well. However, just this week there was a statement released by the US Department of State which indicated that, according to Guatemala President Berger, Guatemala would become Hague ready on January 1st 2008! You get where I am going with this?! That would mean that adoptions would stop until the United States was Hague ready, apparently slated for April of 2008. Once the US adopts the Hague, then Guatemala would open its NEW (can't wait to see what that is!) system to the US and adoptions would reopen. There is one pointed question in all of this: what happens to all of the in-process cases? To all of the families that began their adoption prior to 12/31/07? Well, that's where the news gets very concerning. According to multiple sources, the Guatemalan government is saying that effective 12/31/07- ALL adoptions from the US will end if the US is not Hague ready and Guatemala is. This means that they will not honor any type of grandfather clause. Of course, upon reading this Rich and I became very concerned. We have read every article out there and are trying to take it all as it comes. We knew this wasn't going to be an easy process and we are certainly seeing that even clearer now. If adoptions halt, there could be major delays in the process. As if there weren't any already?

So, what does this all mean? Well, I have attached some information below for you to read. It's late and I couldn't possibly recapture all the details. The JCICS post really does a nice job of outlining the issues. There are a few things to consider: Guatemala is currently in the process of an election and President Berger will be out on 1/14. He is major anti-adoption so he probably wants to exert his power before leaving. Secondly, there are 2 bills before Congress to pass the Hague-and they are not expected to be heard in Congress in GC until November. There is a chance that the implementation of the Hague will be delayed in Guatemala until April. Our agency seems to think this will happen as the attorney's and ADA will fight this to the bitter end through the courts in Guatemala. It is also virtually impossible that Guatemala will be Hague ready when they plan to implement the Hague on January 1st of 2008. They currently have NO standards in place for processing under this new system. Very scary.

I post this article only to inform. Rich and I are closely monitoring the events as they unfold and we are highly confident that the adoption community will stand together to overcome this. If Guatemala halts adoptions, that would leave 5000 referred children-- who have already been macthed with loving adoptive families-- with an uncertain future. It really shakes me to think that would include Nathan.
I am quickly learning that part of going through an international adoption is accepting that which you can not control. I always have to remind myself too...the greatest things in life come from taking great risks and putting forth tremendous effort...our reward at the end will only be that much sweeter. Change is coming...but let's hope it holds off until April 1st and allows for a provision to grandfather all in process cases. Let's all hope...

This weekend I find myself a little "down" about the adoption. So far, there have been good days and bad days and I have been able to find a good balance. Tonight though, I am finding the wait a bit harder. I will never lose sight of the gold at the end of this rainbow...but sometimes I must concede that I am saddened by the distance....and the endless waiting.

So, tonight, I will have to make do with looking at some pics and thinking about all the good times to come. Sweet dreams to all...

Top Secret...

Ok, those of you who follow my blog know that I have a secret blog pal. Kind of like a pen pal only you don't reveal your name, etc. She has really spoiled me with gifts! A while back she sent me some beautiful things from Mayan Traditions and just yesterday she sent me a perfect blue Disney blanket which I am planning on saving for Nathan when he comes home. I have the best SBP!

So....she keeps leaving me hints as to her 'secret identity'. At first, the lead trail was stone cold but slowly over the past week I have been thinking more and more and I have some ideas. She gave me a clue that she lives in the mid-west and that we have bumped into one another on another adoption board before. She said I had even seen pictures of her son before? This one really got me. I don't like secrets so it's killing me. But, she seems really good at keeping them-- she's not leaking any clues! Putting the 'mystery' aside-- it is so great to have the opportunity to pal up with other people who are going through the same 'topsy turvy' process that we call International Adoption. So- a big shout out to my SBP- so glad we're able to chat -- even if it is secretly! :-) As my FTIA pal "N" said on her blog recently, this process is not for the faint of heart.

Oh, and I would be remiss if I didn't mention one last thing. Some of you my have recently listened to an NPR piece on All Things Considered on Guatemalan Adoptions. And, if you haven't -- don't bother. It's terrible and completely misleading. It is so disturbing to me that a reputable reporting source like NPR would broadcast such false information and distort that information in a way that is clearly sensationalizing. I was really disappointed in this broadcast. So much so that I've sent a letter expressing my disappointment....

Yes- this is the philosophy of life on Paradise Island. I have to admit: it was beautiful to be able to live the life of the Bahamnians for just 3 days. If only life were that easy..... then the dream was over and I returned to life in suburban Pennsylvania!

Loved spending time with my family and we all had an amazing time. The weather was absolutely perfect everyday-- 90's and sunny. My sister and I went on the lazy river ride (2 miles) about 17 times the whole trip and we would have gone another 17 if we could have. I somehow managed to convince her to go on "the Drop". You'd think the name would give it away, right?! They said it was "easy" but I thought she was going to lose it when the guy in front of us dropped straight down on his tube at about 40 miles per hour. Thankfully we made it through but she was not a happy camper- sorry M! :-)

We ate great food, got terrible 1st day sunburns, and soaked up all the sights that Paradise Island has to offer. There were a ton of people on vacation there from Guatemala and Mexico so it was a treat to see all the little ones in the family. Needless to say, we'll be going again next year and little Nate will be with us! He's gonna love it. We'll have him a water rat before the trip is over!

And-- drum roll please-- I'm proud to announce that I did not use the internet ONCE while in Paradise-- a whopping 4 days! Rich was especially proud since he's already suggested I attend computer internet addiction classes. Just kidding, of course!

Well, the adoption is on cruise control right now. Waiting for that coveted preapproval from the United States Embassy. It's frustrating that they make you wait so long. I understand the files need to be scrutinized-- but come on-- this is the United State- the free nation for all free nations....you'd think they would have enough staff to do this properly in a couple weeks. Ugghhh!

I'll be talking with Maria tomorrow night so I will get an update on how the little guy is doing. Hard to believe we'll be with him in 2 weeks.

I know many of you can easily fill in that blank! But, no, I am not headed to Guatemala tomorrow. My family takes a vacation every year and we planned this a while ago. I had to cut my stay short to a long weekend but I am still looking forward to time at the beach. We are now in a holding pattern with the adoption and we probably won't hear anythying until the third week of October at the earliest. So, I will enjoy spending time with my family and try really hard to drink one too many margarita's by the beach. :-)

Double Dose of Good News!

Holy Cow-- we got Family Court Approval!

I just got home and to my wonderful surprise- found the email from our coordinator! Our file was approved by Family Court today! WOW- that was really fast-- only 5 weeks! I am still completely surprised that it happened this quickly. This is wonderful news because it means our file is ready to go to PGN-- as soon as we get that PA! When we met with our attorney he said he would submit us to PGN the same week we got PA. What a relief to know all we are waiting for is that precious US Embassy Preapproval.

It seemed back in mid August that 2 months had passed without any news and now we are all set to enter PGN with one exception which we should have by November 1st-- or sooner! It continues to give us hope as we wait through this tremendously trying process.

All for this little guy, too.... (we're getting closer!!)

Can you spell Relief?!

YAY- thank goodness and what a relief-- we received our DNA match today (99.997!)! We are so thankful and relieved to officially know we have moved on to waiting for Preapproval. I have to admit....waiting this weekend for that to come was difficult...but now it's arrived and we are moved on!

It came today and we both were SO nervous to open it. This news definetely makes our week and gives us the assurance we needed to know that our Journey to Nate will continue. Now, back to impatiently waiting for PA...on day # 4! :-)

DNA results....well, sort of!

Ok, we have been anxiously waiting to report that match! But it hasn't come to us yet! The lab said it would take 3-5 days from Tuesday of this week. ****However, we confirmed that the Embassy in Guatemala received our results on 9/6! YAY- that means that we can start the countdown for Pre-approval from 9/6! We talked with our agency and they *seemed* to indicate that the lab would call them if their wasn't a match or if there was some type of a problem with the match not being strong enough. So- we feel pretty confident that we are home FREE and officially have 2 days waiting for PA under our belt! PA--for those not aware- is the United States Embassy in Gutemala pre-approving us to complete our adoption. This is generally taking 8 weeks. Some receive sooner, but we're just being realistic and expecting an 8 week wait. That means we're expecting pre-approval by November 1st! Once we obtain this approval, we can move into the final (and most uncertain) phase of the adoption. It's nicely called "PGN"....but I've seen some other not so nice names for it. It can be brutal and is so inconsistent. Once you are approved in PGN, there is about a 4-5 week wait and then we'll get to bring Nathan home! We pray that he'll be home soon....but it is unknown until we get out of PGN. Anyway, for today we're celebrating the fact that the Embassy received our results and we're waiting for PA! :-) Oh, and Nathan's 4 month Birthday!
